I’ll Be There For You..

FRIENDS Themed Twin Baby Shower

Sunday, May 14th (Mother’s Day!) was an exciting day for our family! It’s the day my cousins shared their exciting and shocking news that sweet TWIN babies would be joining our family this fall! And we all could not have been any more excited and happy to hear of these babies arrivals. Immediately I said, “I can’t wait to plan a baby shower for TWINS!!” So my eldest cousin and I got right to it discussing possibilities for the big day. The biggest item to get narrowed down was a date. With it being twins, we wanted to be sure we were giving my cousin plenty of time as twins are known to make an early appearance and we wanted to her be semi comfortable as she needed to travel in for the shower. With that, August it was!

Next, my cousin and I sent a bunch of ideas back and forth for weeks trying to narrow down the perfect theme. When it comes to themes, I struggle with making a decision. I like to be ahead of the trends and come up with creative ideas, but then that makes for finding decorations more difficult at times. But if you choose a theme that’s been circulating for awhile, it allows you to have a lot more options to choose from to make it your own. TIP: if you’re choosing a popular theme for your event, try to find a new element within the event that might be different than what your guests have already seen. During my long week of work travel and my late night ritual of watching Friends alone in my hotel room, it hit me! My cousin has always prided herself on being the ultimate Friends fan. And I thought to myself why not make the shower all about her love for the show? So.. “The One Where Kirsten has Twins” was born! We all immediately fell in love with it and things started falling into place from there.

The coincidence of choosing this theme was that The Friends experience happened to be in town at the time of planning. This allowed you to go and walk through the actual different TV sets of the show Friends. It was perfect because we were able to go as a group and get inspiration for shower details without our cousin being the wiser. And fun bonus, girls night out!

After going, we knew right away that we needed to incorporate a Central Perk space while allowed us to put a fun themed spin on your standard shower coffee bar. It was by far my favorite scene of the whole shower. It truly felt like you were in a New York coffee shop with all your friends but actually it was my Aunt’s living room. And we were able to make it baby focused by adding the cute onesies with all the favorite Friends quotes. Next, we needed to think of fun favors for our friends and family to take home. That one stumped us for a few days! We weren’t sure if we wanted to go in the direction of favors that were more baby related or Friends theme focused. My niece came up with the cutest idea! U-Pick favors! Our friends and family would be able to pick their favorite coffee mugs, coffee, or tea. It turned out better than I expected! I loved it and I got a new mug out of the deal!

Next, the charcuterie table of our dreams came together! *Insert heart eyes here.* When talking with my cousin about the food and beverage, we knew with the timeframe of our shower that a lot of food wouldn’t be necessary. We needed snacks that would appeal to all dietary needs and we wanted to incorporate foods that were highlighted in the TV show. (Monica’s mockolate, Phoebe’s I got the hummus, Monica’s jam, etc.) While charcuterie has been a popular appetizer on the scene for while, I recently had seen in my research these beautiful full table displays of just finger foods and instantly knew this would be a great fit for the shower. To continue the theme throughout the space, we needed to center the food around something fun! Of course, TWINS needed to be showcased as we’re all so happy there’s two babies to love! And we can’t forget about the adorable “mom”osa bar. No shower complete without this signature drink.

The dining room we left as extra seating and displayed the themed desserts (Rachel’s Trifle and Phoebe’s Grandmother’s Cookies). The centerpiece was made out of thrifted vases and jars I found at the Salvation Army. I then painted the inside with a variety of purples, knowing we’d be putting sunflowers inside them (my cousins favorite flowers!). This idea allowed us to keep the theme continuous but simple and feminine. Again, with any event, big or small lessons are always learned. One lesson in particular with this event, was the vases. With there being so much paint on the inside to ensure the vases were fully covered. It was hard to get the paint to dry, especially the more narrow the vase was. Once the water for the flowers was added the paint immediately started to come off. Huge bummer! But, good thing was it was minimal and no one noticed. Next time I attempt this project, I will need to find a way to ensure the vases are fully dried before putting water in them for flowers. Once, I find the trick. I will definitely share!

All in all, it was a beautiful baby shower and a fantastic day celebrating our growing family. I couldn’t be more happy with how our vision came together. It took a great team to make it all happen. And the best part of the whole day, is knowing that we were able to make my cousin feel SO loved and bring a huge smile to her face as she starts her new journey as a Mama! We’ll be there for you, Kirsten!
